Did you know that Rule 105.8 on
Training and Career Development establishes the programs that the General
Secretariat shall provide for the development of knowledge and skills, the
improvement of performance, and career advancement? According
to this Rule the program shall include, as a minimum: (i) Training courses in the official languages of the
OAS and other skills; (ii) Partial tuition reimbursement for studies in
educational or training institutions approved by the General Secretariat; and (iii) Special leave for training or specialized
research. Subparagraph
(c) states that preferential attention shall be given in the training program
to stimulating and supporting the improvement of members of the Career
Service and of staff under continuing contracts. The Staff Association, recognizing the importance of
relying upon trained staff, has been sponsoring language classes (French,
Portuguese, Spanish and English) for staff. In addition, the Staff Committee has brought to the attention
of the General Secretariat the urgent need to carry out orientation trainings
for new staff, on norms, ethical conduct, prevention of Workplace and Sexual
Harassment, conflict resolution and on Whistleblower Protection from
Retaliatory Actions. An investment in improving capacity is an investment in
the future of the Organization.
